New Year – New Start!
By Jason Mallia IMD (
Thinking of a clean start for 2010 ?, why not start with a detox!. Detoxification has been used for centuries to rid the body of unwanted toxic accumulations. Detoxification is a proven way for your digestive system and liver to get back optimum function. Toxic and incompatible foods for your blood type are also known causes of stress to your digestive system and liver, not to mention the toxic residues from food additives, preservatives pesticides and herbicides.
The truth about detoxifying you body
Most people cringe at the thought of having to do a detox , however the good news is that detoxification doesn’t need to be too difficult to achieve!. Detoxification encourages the body to gently remove toxic waste chemicals from your body, and is proven to increase your energy levels , fitness level and weight loss capacity. It may also help in the prevention of chronic disease and anti -ageing.
Heres how !
Your GUT is the foundation for human Health!
One of the most important organ systems for optimum health is your digestive system. In natural medicine, the gut is considered to be the foundation of human health. If your digestive system becomes stressed or out of balance it can increase the amount of toxins you absorb, leaving you feeling flat , tired and run down. The type and the amount of bacteria in your digestive system also plays an important role in keeping both you and your gut healthy. If there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria or yeast in your gut, this can make you more toxic
And this may also reduce your ability to get rid yourself of toxins.
Weeding out the bad flora
It is well documented that antimicrobial herbs such as black walnut, wormwood, barberry, and antimicrobial oils such as oregano, cinnamon and thyme have been proven to kill off any detrimental bacteria and yeasts (the bad flora) that may be upsetting your gut.
These herbs may be combined with colostrum powder, to help prevent the adherence of harmful microbes to the gut wall. This potent combination
will help to weed out all the bad bugs that have been affecting your gut, helping to restore your digestive system to optimal health and function
Putting the good flora back in
Part of a comprehensive detox plan involves not only killing off any bad bacteria and yeasts, but replenishing your digestive system with beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. There are different types of probiotics; and whilst they are all beneficial for digestion, their
functions can vary slightly. For example, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis are good for restoring general balance and maintaining overall digestive function, while Lactobacillus plantarum is more specific for medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome and Lactobacillus
rhamnosis is great if you are prone to allergies and eczema. With so many different beneficial strains of probiotics available, you and your doctor can choose the most appropriate strain for you, tailoring your detox plan to suit your needs.
Leaky Gut and Gut Healing
Stress, toxins, alcohol, junk food , processed food and incompatible foods for your blood type can cause damage to the delicate cells of the digestive tract. This may lead to a condition known as ‘leaky gut ’, a condition in which undigested food and toxins pass from the digestive tract and into the blood stream. If this occurs, it can cause digestive upset, inflammation and increase our risk of food
Allergies and other diseases. If you have poor digestion and possibly a leaky gut, then it may be a good idea to use healing nutrients and herbs such as glutamine, Aloe vera, licorice, and zinc as part of your detox. These nutrients and herbs may be able to reduce your leaky gut, improving digestion and health.
The Liver Phase of your Detox program
Once the digestive system has healed the next stage is to clean your liver! Your liver is your body’s main cleansing unit and to give yourself a good clean-out on the inside, you need a healthy liver that is functioning at optimal capacity. Herbs such as Milk thistle, watercress, globe artichoke, turmeric and shizandra can all work together to support liver function and stimulate detoxification. , ask your doctor which supplements best suit you.
How about diet for detoxification?
Excessive sugar, alcohol and processed foods may upset your digestive balance and can burden your liver, so reducing these will help detox your digestive system and get your liver back into balance. A low reactive blood type specific diet , along with freshly made fruit and veggie juices can be added to a healthy diet to improve detoxification. Here are some suggestions of some great juices:
For O Blood types try lemon, beetroot, ginger carrot and celery
For A types try carrot, celery, and ginger grapefruit and beetroot juice
For AB types try celery, cabbage, carrot, and ginger juice
For B types beetroot, ginger, carrot and cabbage juice
And of course it is also very important to make sure you drink lots of clean filtered water while you are detoxing. Correct hydration will ensure that you flush the toxins out of your body.
