BLACK PEARL BP004 BAO HE WAN CITRUS & CRATAEGUS
Reduces food stagnation and promotes digestion, regulates the Qi and harmonises the middle Jiao.

Syndromes:
Food stagnation in the Stomach and Intestines.

Bao He Wan literally means: Formula to Preserve Harmony. It was designed to reduce food stagnation and promote digestion as well as regulate the Qi in the middle Jiao (and hence preserve harmony between the Stomach and Spleen).

Indications:
Indigestion (due to over consumption), gastritis, chronic cholecystitis.

Signs and Symptoms:
Epigastric or abdominal fullness; Belching; Nausea; Acid reflux; Loss of appetite; Symptoms worsened by eating; Epigastric or abdominal pain; Vomiting; Halitosis; Constipation or diarrhoea; Tongue with a thick greasy coat; Slippery pulse.

Actions of Main Herbs:
Crataegus fruit (shan zha) when roasted is used orally in formulas to promote the digestion of meat and fatty foods. It has been shown to have anticholesterolemic an stomachic actions
Pinellia tuber (ban xia), prepared with ginger juice is used orallyin formulas to treat digestive disorders with nausea, vomiting, epigastric distension, loss of appetite, borborygmus, etc. It has been shown to have an antiemetic and carminative action.
Raphanus seed (lai fu zi) is used orally in formulas to promote the digestion of starches and food made from flour. It has been shown to have carminative, antibacterial and antifungal actions.

Dosage and Course of Treatments:
8 – 12 pills, 3 times daily, half to one hour away from food.
In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 1 – 2 weeks) the dosage may be increased by 50 – 100%.
Course of treatment: For acute conditions 1 – 2 weeks at high dosage. For chronic conditions may be used for longer periods when combined with a tonic formula (see Combinations below).

Acid reflux, heartburn, nausea: Wen Dan Tang (Bamboo & Hoelen Formula BP050); Ban Xia Hou Po Tang – Jia Wei (Pinellia & Magnolia Combination BP067)
Chronic gastritis: Xiang Sha Liu Jun Wan (Saussurea & Cardamon Formula BP028); Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Major Herbs Combination BP082).
Chronic poor digestion (select one or more of the following): Jian Pi Wan (Ginseng & Citrus Formula BP014); Er Chen Wan (Citrus & Pinellia Combination BP010); Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng & Atractylodes Formula BP020)
With epigastric pain: Chai Hu Shu Gan Wan (Bupleurum & Cyperus Combination BP006); Either Xiang Sha Yang Wei Wan (Cyperus & Cardamon Formula BP083) Or Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Wan (Saussurea & Cardamon Formula BP028).

The synergistic actions of the ingredients are as follows:
Crataegus fruit (shan zha): reduces food stagnation and promotes digestion, especially for meat and fatty foods.
Hordeum sprout (shen qu): reduces food stagnation and promotes digestion, especially for alcohol.
Citrus peel (chen pi), Poria cocos (fu ling), Pinellia tuber (ban xia): regulate the Qi and harmonise the Stomach and Spleen.
Raphanus seed (lai fu zi): reduces food stagnation and promotes digestion, especially for grains and flour products.
Forsythia fruit (lian qiao): clears Heat due to stagnation and also breaks up accumulated (or bound) pathogens.

– Citrus reticulata, fruit peel 陳皮 55.8 mg
– Wolfiporia cocos, fruit. body 茯苓 45.7 mg
– Raphanus sativus, seed 萊菔子 45.7 mg
– Forsythia suspensa, fruit 連翹 45.7 mg
– Pinellia ternata, tuber 半夏 44.0 mg

Cautions and Contraindications:
Do not take at the same time as iron supplements as the tannins in Crataegus fruit interfere with the absorption of iron.
