CHINAMED FREE FLOW FORMULA QIAN LIE KANG

This is a modern empirical formula that has been developed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostatic hypertrophy) as well as chronic non-bacterial prostatitis. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that generally restricts the flow of urine from the bladder. It is a common problem affecting the quality of life for approximately one third of men older than 50 years. Histologic evidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia occurs in up to 90% of men by age 80 years.

In TCM these conditions are categorised under dysuria (or stranguria) syndrome (lin zheng). Dysuria syndromes have three basic underlying causes: Damp-Heat in the Bladder, Liver constraint with stagnant Heat; and deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney. The first two lead to excess syndromes that manifest as acute disorders. Over time they may develop into deficiency syndromes, manifesting as chronic conditions. At this stage there is only a residual component of the original pathogen, i.e. Heat or Damp-Heat. Because prolonged retention of pathogens obstructs the movement of Qi and Blood in addition to depleting the health Qi chronic dysuria is generally complicated by the presence of Blood stasis.

This formula focuses on Kidney Yin deficiency together with Blood stasis as the predominant disease mechanisms. It also clears any residual Heat or Damp-Heat from the lower Jiao, and facilitates the flow of urine. In addition it contains several herbs with an astringing action, e.g. Cornus fruit (shan zhu yu), which improve the bladder�s capacity to store urine, thus reducing urinary frequency.

Dosage & Course of Treatment
– 3 – 4 capsules, 2 -3 times daily.
– In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 2 – 4 weeks) the dosage may be increased by 50%.
– Course of treatment: 3 – 6 months, or ongoing in elderly patients.
– Safe to use long term.

Cautions & Contraindications
– Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. Heparin, warfarin or aspirin). – Contains Glycyrrhiza, which potentiates prednisone and corticosteroids by prolonging steroid biological half-life; caution in patients with hypertension.
