TCM Actions
Nourishes the Kidney (and Liver) Yin, enriches the Kidney Essence, reduces deficiency Fire and drains Damp-Heat.

Indications
Debility due to chronic illness, tinnitus, diabetes mellitus, urethritis, cystitis, glomerulonephritis, vaginitis, prostatitis, chronic respiratory infection, involuntary seminal emissions, leukorrhoea, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, pyrexia of unknown origin.

Dosage & Course Of Treatment
8 pills, 3 times daily, half to one hour away from food.

Course of treatment: 3 – 6 months, or longer in elderly patients (at lower dosage)

Safe for long term use.

Signs and Syndromes
Kidney Yin deficiency with Fire flaring (or with Damp-Heat in the low­er Jiao)

Flushed face or red cheeks or malar flush

Low grade fever or tidal fever or afternoon fever

Dry mouth and throat, thirst

Low back pain

Night sweating

Hot hands and feet

Dizziness or light headedness

Restlessness

Vexation

Sleep disturbance

Nocturnal seminal emissions (M) or frequent sexual dreams (F)

Overactive libido

Dysuria

Vaginal discharge

Red tongue with scanty or peeled coat

Discontinue during an episode of common cold or influenza.

Comments
This is a variant of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula), which was first recorded in ‘Syndrome Analysis According to the Pulse’ (zheng yin mai zhi), by Qin Jing-ming, 1702. The formula makes use of the synergistic pair: Phellodendron (huang bai) and Anemarrhena (zhi mu) to reduce Fire due to Kidney Yin deficiency. This formula treats the syndrome of Kidney Yin deficiency with Fire flaring, which is a complication of Kidney Yin deficiency, in which the clinical features of deficiency Heat or deficiency Fire predominate. The causes of this syndrome are the same as for Kidney Yin deficiency, see comments on Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula BP015). It should be noted that there is always some degree of deficiency Heat that accompanies Kidney Yin deficiency. However, the degree of severity of the Heat determines the clinical priorities of treatment. Thus, in cases with relatively minor manifestation of Heat, treatment should be directed primarily towards tonifying the deficiency e.g. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula BP015). In cases with the severe manifestations of Fire, treatment should be simultaneously directed towards reducing the Fire as well as nourishing the Kidney Yin, which are the clinical actions of this formula. In addition, it may also be used in cases with Damp-Heat in the lower Jiao (generally a protracted condition) with deficiency of the Kidney Yin, which may have been pre-existing or brought about through the damage caused by the pathogens (e.g. subacute or chronic/recurring inflammatory conditions of the urogenital system). The synergistic actions of the herbs are as follows:

• Rehmannia root (di huang), Dioscorea root (shan yao), Cornus fruit (shan zhu yu): Enrich the Kidney Essence and nourish the Kidney Yin

• Wolfiporia cocos (fu ling), Alisma plantago rhizome (ze xie): drain Damp and induce diuresis

• Paeonia stem bark (mu dan pi), Alisma rhizome (ze xie), Phellodendron bark (huang bai), Anemarrhena rhizome (zhi mu): reduce deficiency Fire

• Dioscorea root (shan yao), Wolfiporia cocos (fu ling): tonify the Spleen Qi

• Cornus fruit (shan zhu yu), Dioscorea root (shan yao): Astringe the Kidney Essence (to allow it to build up without loss).

• Phellodendron bark (huang bai), Anemarrhena rhizome (zhi mu): reduce deficiency Fire, drain Damp-Heat from the lower Jiao
