Indications
Mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers), sore throat, pharyngitis, sore gums, gingivitis, chronic tonsillitis, cataracts, pterygium, episcleritis, keratitis, chronic conjunctivitis, chronic dry eyes, chronic dry mouth and throat, chronic dry skin, Sjögren’s syndrome

Dosage & Course Of Treatment
8 pills, 3 times daily, half to one hour away from food.

Course of treatment: 1 – 6 months.

Signs and Syndromes
Yin deficiency Deficiency of the Body Fluids Heat or Fire

Dryness signs: e.g. dry eyes, mouth, throat, nose and skin

Oral ulceration

Inflammation and pain of the gums

Sore throat that may also be swollen

Dry cough

Malar or facial flush

Night sweating

Tidal fever or low grade fever, or subjective feeling of heat

Dry tongue that may also be red with a thin, scanty coat that may be yellow

Thready pulse that may also be wiry and rapid

Cautions & Contraindications
Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. heparin, warfarin or aspirin).

Comments
This formula is a variant of Gan Lu Yin (Sweet Dew Formula) from the ‘Formulary of the Taiping Welfare Dispensary Bureau’ (tai ping hui min he ji ju fang) a collection of popular and effective prescriptions that were used in the public dispensaries of the Song dynastic period (11th to 14th Centuries). It is used for a wide variety of conditions characterised by deficiency of the Yin and Body Fluids with flourishing Fire affecting the upper body, as described above, under Indications.Clinically, these conditions are all charcterised by symptoms of dryness, together with clinical signs of Yin deficiency and depletion of the Body Fluids. It should be noted that most of these disorders are located on areas supplied by the Lung or Stomach Channels: Dryness and Fire are transmitted from these organs via their Channels upwards to affect various tissues of the throat, face and head. This is a well designed formula that addresses all of the relevant aspects of the pathogenesis in such conditions: deficiency of the Kidney Yin and Lung Yin, pathogenic Heat and Fire as well as impaired Qi dynamic of the middle Jiao. This variant is enhanced with the addition of Scrophularia (xuan shen), which nourishes the Yin and Body Fluids, clears Heat and cools the Blood, purges Fire Toxin, disperses bound pathogens to softens lumps. The synergistic actions of the herbs are as follows:

• Rehmannia root (di huang/shu di huang), Asparagus tuber (tian dong), Ophiopogon tuber (mai dong), Scrophularia root (xuan shen), Lilium bulb (bai he): nourish the Yin and regenerate the Body Fluids, reduce Heat due to deficiency

• Rehmannia root (di huang/shu di huang): nourish the Kidney Yin
