CHINAMED NECK & SHOULDER FORMULA JING JIAN QU TONG FANG

This is an empirical formula that has been developed to address arthritis in the upper body, specifically in the shoulders, neck, elbow and hands. It is based on the formula Juan Bi Tang (Formula to treat Bi syndrome) from Yangs Family Prescriptions (yang shi jia zang fang), by Yang Tan, 1178. The original formula has been enhanced with the addition of Pueraria root (ge gen) and Morus twig (sang zhi), which focus the formulas action on the upper body.

It should be noted that this formula is suitable for Cold type conditions with underlying deficiency of the Qi and Blood and should not be used in patients with signs of Heat (e.g. red joints that are hot to the touch, fever, red tongue, rapid pulse).

Ingredients:
– Pueraria lobata, root 葛根 268.2 mg
– Astragalus membranaceus, root 黄芪 199.8 mg
– Angelica polymorpha, root 當歸 199.8 mg
– Morus alba, twig 桑枝 199.8 mg
– Notopterygium incisum, root and rhiz. 薑活 199.8 mg
– Paeonia obovata, root 赤芍 199.8 mg
– Curcuma longa, rhizome 199.8 mg
– Saposhnikovia divaricata, root 防風 199.8 mg
– Glycyrrhiza uralensis, root 甘草 66.6 mg
– Zingiber officinale, rhizome (fresh) 生薑 66.6 mg

Signs & Symptoms
– Facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy)
– Rheumatoid arthritis
– Neck pain
– Arthritis
– Pain, neck or shoulder

Dosage & Course of Treatment
– 6 – 10 capsules, twice daily.
– In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 1 – 2 weeks) the dosage may be increased by 50%.
– Course of treatment: 3 – 6 months, or ongoing (e.g. elderly patients).
– Safe to use long term.

Cautions & Contraindications
– Avoid foods that may aggravate arthritis (e.g. sugar, caffeine, citrus, salt, red meat, dairy products, additives, soft drinks, white flour, nightshades, white potatoes, tobacco).
– Avoid hydrogenated fats (i.e. trans-fats).
– Not suitable for arthritic and rheumatic conditions due to Heat.
– Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. Heparin, warfarin or aspirin).
– Contains Glycyrrhiza, which potentiates prednisone and corticosteroids by prolonging steroid biological half-life; caution in patients with hypertension.
