CHINAMED OSTEO SUPPORT FORMULA GU ZHI SHU SONG JIANG NANG

This is a modern variant of Qing E Wan (Young Maiden Formula) from the Formulary of the Tai Ping Welfare Dispensary Bureau (tai ping hui min he ji ju fang) (1151 CE), a compilation of popular and effective formulas that were used in the public dispensaries of the Song dynastic period.

The original formula was a simple combination of three herbs that were powdered and mixed with garlic and honey to form large pills. It was prescribed for low back pain due to Kidney Yang deficiency.

This formula has been enhanced with the additional herbs that promote bone density and repair, the selection of which is based on the findings of modern research together with the empirical experience of senior clinicians in China. This makes it suitable for the treatment of low back and hip pain in addition to reduced bone density in the elderly. The TCM actions have also been broadened accordingly to include nourishing the Liver Blood and activating the Blood to dispel Blood stasis, both of which are common in this age group and contribute to the development of osteoporosis.

It should be noted that this is a warming formula and should not be used in patients with Fire due to Yin deficiency with signs of dryness and Heat.

– Eucommia ulmoides, stem bark 杜仲 175.6 mg
– Cullen corylifolium, seed 補骨脂 175.6 mg
– Achyranthes bidentata, root 牛膝 175.6 mg
– Dipsacus asper, root 續斷 131.7 mg
– Epimedium brevicornu, herb 淫羊藿 131.7 mg
– Angelica polymorpha, root 當歸 131.7 mg
– Lycium barbarum, fruit 枸杞子 131.7 mg
– Citrus aurantium, fruit 枳殼 131.7 mg
– Paeonia obovata, root 赤芍 131.7 mg
– Spatholobus suberectus, stem 雞血藤 131.8 mg

Signs & Symptoms
– Osteoporosis
– Pain and weakness in lower back
– Knee pain, chronic
– Numbness and tingling in the extremities
– Dizziness, postural
– Tinnitus or lack of hearing
– Muscular atrophy or weakness
– Low libido

Dosage & Course of Treatment
– 6 – 10 capsules, twice daily.
– In severe cases and in the early stages of treatment (first 2 – 4 weeks) the dosage may be increased by 50%.
– Course of treatment: 3 – 9 months (or ongoing in severe cases)
– Safe to use long term.

Cautions & Contraindications
– Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. Heparin, warfarin or aspirin).
– Not for use in patients with Fire due to Yin deficiency or Heat excess syndromes.
