Main Actions

Indications
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, Menorrhagia,
polymenorrhea), Menstrual problems (corpus luteum deficiency, Luteal phase
complaints,
Spasmodic dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS),
Premenstrual oedema, acne, Cystic hyperplasia of endometrium/benign breast
disease/mastalgia, Hormonal dysfunction/endometriosis/fibroids/infertility
Follicular ovarian cysts/painful, erratic ovulation,
Threatened miscarriage/promotes lactation/latent hyperprolactinaemia, Post-natal
depression
Restores menstrual cycle after oral contraceptive pill (OCP), Menopausal
problems (fluid retention, hot flushes, weight gain, anxiety, nervousness,
depression)
Active Constituents
Essential oil: Sesquiterpenoids, Alpha-pinene, Betapinene, Castine, Eucalyptol,
Limonene, Cineole.
Flavonoid: Iridoid glycoside.
Progesterone (hormonal); Hydroxyprogesterone (hormonal); Testosterone
(hormonal).
Dosage
1-5mL/daily
5-30mL/weekly
(It is common practice and recommended that Chaste Tree be taken as a single
dose of 2-3mL on rising before breakfast, starting day one of the menstrual cycle.
Treatment for a minimum of 3-6 months may be appropriate).
Contradictions
Avoid use in children, post-menopausal and persons on orthodox hormone
therapy (OCP/HRT) and in conjunction with progesterone drugs. May aggravate
spasmodic dysmenorrhea not related to PMS.
Hormone driven cancers (E.g. breast and ovarian cancer).
Special Warnings and Precautions
Avoid large doses and prolonged use of high doses. Should be discontinued if the
length of menstrual cycle has excessively changed.
Herb/Drug Interactions
Moderate – Contraceptives. May interfere with dopamine receptor antagonists.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Should not be used during pregnancy except under strict supervision by a
herbalist/medical professional and only in the early stages for insufficient corpus
luteal function. Chaste Tree is best avoided during lactation.
Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Cases of allergic skin reactions have been reported. May cause indigestion,
headache, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, mastalgia and depression.
